Dell Xps 420 Windows 7

Can I remove removable drives that have drive letters assigned & display 0 bytes?
Running Windows 7. We have just finished installation clean after the use of "release candidate". After restoration of external drives and connect to a memory stick sometimes I have a number of "disks removable, with drive letters assigned. Properties gives 0 bytes used / available and Disk Management These show how 'No Media. I am running a Dell XPS 420 and has number of media slots. for example, SD cards and not sure if they relate to those. When I insert a card SD of an additional drive letter is assigned. Ugh, I'm not sure what is happening. Please, if you know what's what in this respect. Thanks
