How do you stop annoying lag online game?

When I'm playing online I get great frames per second for the first couple of minutes and my CPU is at 50% but out of no where my CPU usage jumps to 100% and I start getting terrible FPS. What causes it? How can I fix it? My computer is a Dell XPS Gen 5 with 3.25GB RAM and am running on an Internet connection wirelessly. I have 453GB hard drive available.
