What is an IRQ and why my machine has a conflict?
IRQ is an acronym for Interrupt Request and refers to channels that are individually numbered used by devices when a processor access.

For example, pressing the keyboard sends a signal to the processor via an IRQ channel (usually IRQ 1) to let him know he needs to process the key stroke. When new hardware is installed and configured, there may be IRQ conflicts. For example, an overlap problem occurs if you have the mouse on COM 1 (IRQ4) and a modem on COM 3 (IRQ4) as the processor can not see the time allocated for both the same IRQ.

Here a handy list of standard IRQ assignments:

  • 1 Keyboard. Can never be used
  • 2 Points IRQ 815 times can be used.
  • 3 COM port can be used if not used for the COM port
  • 4 COM ports can be used if not used for the COM port
  • 5 parallel port can be used if not used Parallel
  • 6 floppy drive can never be used
  • 7 Parallel port can be used if not used Parallel
  • 8 Real Time Clock can never be used
  • 9 Redirect to IRQ 2. Usable
  • 10 Unassigned Can be used
  • 11 can be used Unassigned
  • 12 PS / 2 mouse can be used if no PS / 2 mouse
  • 13 math coprocessor. It can never be used.
  • 14 Primary IDE controller can never be used
  • 15 Secondary IDE controller can be used if there is no second hard drive

If you have an ISA board you must change the IRQ in the BIOS to the / Legacy ISA configuration for the PCI bus does not try to use it. It is a common mistake to use Windows XPs built-in IRQ settings for accessing resources from the Device Manager through the Control Panel of XP, but that will correctly change the assignments of the motherboard IRQ in the BIOS itself.

Change IRQ

– BIOS access computers (usually requires a restart, then pressing DEL key or a function key).
– Look for Plug N Play or PnP Settings
– Determine if PnP is automatically or manually configured to assign IRQs. Set to Manual.
– Now you can see which IRQ setting corresponds to the device and download them. Find your conflicting ISA device and assign it to an open IRQ using the list above.
– Save and exit the BIOS, restart your machine.

You're now an expert in IRQ settings! If the conflict persists, consider contacting an experienced supplier of Industrial Computers, as they can properly configure rel = "nofollow" href = "http://www.duropc.com/industrial_pc_options.php?cPath=53&products_id=155"> ISA slot devices in a cost-effective.
