Dell Xps Laptop Charger

Why does my laptop to do this with my charger?

I have a dell xps studio (got it for free, for comments from Dell, please. I'll take a free laptop. I'm not proud). He came with the charger (of course, but with some representatives from Dell, this apparently is not at all obvious). Every time I plug the charger in my laptop does not recognize the charger. She tells me is wrong and the charger will not charge the battery, etc. Now, here's the kicker: If I disconnect and unplug the charger for the laptop, it works.
