What is the correct way to carry a laptop?

I just got a new Dell XPS M1330 laptop that runs on a lithium ion battery. I mainly using the laptop on my desk (where output is always available) to 3-4 + one-hour sessions. Should I keep the AC on all the time, or turn it off and use the battery life? If I unplug it and use the battery, is there any specific time of when to reconnect the AC adapter for charging, or simply press whenever I like, just taking care not to overload it (off a shelf life of the battery reaches 100%)? Moreover, someone could confirm it is correct to always unplug the AC adapter when the laptop is turned off? (Many people have told me this.) Hopefully these methods will keep my battery for a longer period (since my previous battery lasted only 1 year, probably from "overload"). THANK YOU!

I always left my connected when I was at home. It will only charge the battery if it needs it.
