Shut Off Randomly computer?

I have a Dell laptop, and just randomly shut down. This is the first time this happened … happen again? The Story: I put the laptop down for 2 minutes, and when I returned to my laptop, the laptop was closed, and I know nobody pressed any button or something, what caused it to shut down at random laptop was for 3 hours to get away from it (only in case of overheating is a factor) Specifications Dell XPS M140 (my laptop): Windows XP Media Center Edition Version 2002 SP3 Intel Pentium M 1.86GHz 512MB RAM

Let me guess, you put it in a blanket? A laptop is made to be placed on a hard surface so air can circulate underneath where the fans and vents are located. If you put a laptop on a low blanket, which will smother the whole cooling system causing it to overheat and shutdown a few minutes. Also the battery could have been killed, a Windows Update may have restarted if your machine is set for automatic updates. Or settings energy saving shut it down.
