Windows 7 has better performance in XP?

Thinking of upgrading to Windows 7 from XP, but only if the performance is better, I deal with editing large photo and video editing in high definition. What I'm running Machine is a Dell XPS M1730 Intel Core 2 Extreme X9000@2.80ghz (2 CPUs) 4gb Ram Some people have recommended I go with a 64bit installation of 7 and my computer performance should increase a lot.

Two quick things: 1) XP will not upgrade to Windows 7. You have to do a clean installation. 2) You can only load 64-bit Windows if you have a 64-bit processor.
