Flashing a custom ROM for the HTC Touch Pro allows you to have an operating system that fits your preferences and needs. In many cases, custom ROMs strip out non-essential software pre-installed as well as apply various performance tuning. In my experience, using a custom ROM is much better than the stock ROM simply because of performance. The difference is night and day! Touch Flo 3D does not lag, the faster the programs open, switch between programs is much Quick, back to the Today screen is faster, and overall responsiveness of the system is much faster than before.
Note These steps apply only if you have a Touch Pro CDMA. These instructions will NOT work with a Touch Pro GSM *. Also, if you return the phone, for any reason, you have to go back to the stock ROM and lock the phone.
Basically there are three steps to flash a custom ROM for your Touch Pro
- Unlock phone to allow the freight and custom boot ROMs
- Choose and download your choice of custom ROMs
- Custom Flash ROM for the HTC Touch Pro using the ROM Update Utility (RUU)
* If you have a GSM Touch Pro, the process is almost the same, except that you have to use an unlocker GSM and GSM custom ROMs.
Preparation
Backup your personal data through a program like PIM Backup (freeware). Also make sure your phone has at least one load of 50%.
Please read this guide and download all the files needed in advance. That way, you know exactly what you're getting into.
Unlock Phone
You need to use the utility HardSPL to unlock the phone. This is a relatively simple procedure, all the instructions and files needed to do this can be found at the resource box.
Raphael_CDMA_HSPL_037.zip Download and install if you have a Sprint Touch Pro If you have a Verizon Touch Pro Verizon_HSPL_Package.zip use.
Choose and download the custom ROM
There are many, many Custom ROMs out there for the Touch Pro. To find the custom ROMs, go to the ROM on the PPCGeeks.com forum.
Look through the wires and find a ROM you like. Custom ROMs differ in their pre-installed software, system configuration, performance tuning and much more.
I chose to go with Yay 4 Juggs' v4.0 ROM because of the pool increase and a nearly clean slate of applications. ROMs usually come packaged in a zip file .. RUU_signed.nbh Extract the file somewhere on your hard drive temporarily in preparation for the next step.
Custom Flash ROM
Now you need to get the ROM Update Utility (RUU) that can be found on the website of the resource box. Extract the RUU folder somewhere on your hard drive, like your desktop. Then copy the custom ROM (RUU_signed.nbh) to the folder you just extracted RUU. For example, the RUU folder is C: RUU and custom ROM is located in C: RUU RUU_signed.nbh.
Turn off the phone, holding the off button until you get this message:
"Power is turned off, and you can lose data if you have not saved them. You want to continue? "
Choose "Yes" to the phone off. Now has the power button down and volume down at the same time to see the screen of the bootloader tri-color. Then connect the phone via USB cable to your computer. The image at right shows what the screen should look right before flashing.
Once you have everything connected correctly, run the program inside the folder ROMUpdateUtility.exe ROM Updater Utility (eg C: RUU ROMUpdateUtility.exe). Follow the onscreen instructions to flash custom ROM to your phone. Restart your phone and the end is finished. Enjoy the new custom ROM!
