A headset allows wireless roam free, listen to music or make a phone call.

There are basically three different technologies that make this possible.

Infra Red (IR) headphones use the same technology as the TV remote control. There are two major disadvantages of using infrared technology for headphones ear. One, you have to be within line of site with the base unit. Two, the scope is limited to about 30 feet.

That's OK, if you are sitting in front of your TV or Hi-Fi, for example. But it is good if you want to walk around the room or elsewhere in the house.

Radio Frequency (RF) headsets offer more flexibility. You do not have to be in line of sight with a base unit and you can walk very far – up to 400 feet or so.

This is great for listening to music without being tied by a rope to your music player.

The drawback to both the IR and the options RF is that you usually get a reduction in sound quality. Even with the headphones or RF, you may have to tinker with the frequency in the base unit until the best reception. And yet, as you move around the house, you can find places where reception is less than perfect.

The most latest technology for the wireless life, of course, Bluetooth.

Bluetooth is designed to connect electronic devices to networks. This allows you to connect computers with wireless printers, for example.

Bluetooth headsets and headphones transformed how we interact with our computers, music players and phones.

With a Bluetooth headset you can not only roam free as you listen to your music, but also can quickly switch from music to phone and back – Depending on the device you are connecting.

Bluetooth allows one to listen to music and take phone calls while driving. This is a great advantage when it comes to security. You can also use the same headset or headphones to listen to music while jogging outside, exercising at the gym or just walking in the mall.

A feature of Bluetooth You should be aware that although the sound quality is excellent, it only works a radius of about 120 meters. (Not a problem if your music player is in your pocket, purse or backpack.)

What type of wireless headphones you choose?

If you want, especially your headphones to listen to music, there are some excellent headphones radio frequencies. Some are over-ear headphones for high quality sound when you're in your home. Others use earphones or clips so you can still be a wire-free when you leave.

If you have a cell phone that also plays your MP3s and you want to be able to switch between calls and music, then your best bet is a Bluetooth headset.
