How do I format the C: drive Vista so I can install XP?

I recently installed Windows Vista on my Dell XPS laptop, but now I back to XP. When I try to boot with the re-installation CD, it does not give me the option to reinstall it because apparently, will not let you Vista downgrade to XP. So now I'm trying to clean my hard drive so I can just re-install the XP operating system. I'm trying to format my C: drive, but it not let me. I get a message that appears saying "YOU CAN NOT FORMAT it VOLUME: contains the version of Windows you are using. The formatting of this book will cause your computer to stop working. "A similar message appears when I try to format using the command prompt. What do I do?!?

If you want to reinstall XP, you need to start your computer using the installation CD for XP not Vista CD. Vista will not allow you downgrade, you need to boot using the Windows XP CD, if you want to do an installation of Windows XP. Once started, it will give you the option to delete the partitions you want to reinstall the operating system. Are you getting error messages when you try to erase your hard drive, because your boot volume is your hard drive. You can not delete your boot volume. Again, just boot your computer with the Windows XP CD (it makes the CD boot volume), then you should be able to erase the hard drive and reinstall XP.
