you can upgrade the memory in a laptop?

Can you upgrade the RAM on a laptop without upgrading the motherboard – I use a Dell XPS with 2 GB of RAM and am wondering know what I need to upgrade – I was told that the memory was maxed out – is that correct?. Thank you.
