SAS vs. SATA/150 – which is faster for RAID?

I am looking to buy a super-fast workstation (with Core 2 Extreme). I had Velocity Micro bought before, but now their workstations (ProMagix W160) only offer RAID SATA 150 10K RPM. http://www.velocitymicro.com/wizard.php?iid=66 Dell Precision T3400 features with RAID drives 15K RPM, SAS 3.0 Gb / s. http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=04&kc=6W300&l=en&oc=bwcw7zz&s=bsd Dell seems much faster! issues (but the font is ridiculously small, and others). Any suggestions? SAS RAID is much faster than SATA?

Currently, they are very similar, but a slight advantage goes to the SAS drives for a few reasons … First off, however, the main difference lies in the ability and cost. Its cost per gigabyte is significantly higher (especially in large sizes volumes) to SAS for the SATA and SCSI to IDE, but was still worse. The performance of the theoretical yield of both interfaces is the same at 3 Gbps. The speed differences come with the speed and form factor. SATA currently out at speeds of 10,000 RPM spindle whereas the SAS goes to 15,000 RPM. This alone provides an increase in their access times as the head has to wait less time for the disk area to go around. However, the form factor also makes the access time of SAS drives better than SATA. With the sizes of plates and only 2.5 inches instead of 3.5, cut about one-third of the disc that also means that the head has to wait less time for a specific area the disk to back around. In addition to this, the SAS drives also use less energy. In RAID configurations, especially those with more than three units, time access becomes a concern because you have effectively increased the disk area that must be searched for however many disks are on your system. I personally never buy a Dell based on past experiences and now I always build my own system. If this is an option for you, or if you have a friend who has the technical know-how, I recommend that over a system of pre-built, it will allow you to really customize their own needs. If cost is no object, I'd go with the SAS … If you would like to save some money without skimping too much about performance, you will be fine with SATA. Anyway, I recommend the 3Ware 9690 SA. Will work with SAS or SATA, supports virtually all RAID levels you need, including RAID 6 … has great driver support (even Vista 64-bit) and is only one card every great … Battery back-up is also available for the card. PS-Please wait until the new 0.45 micron Core2s, perhaps a 9770, when they are out, they are head and shoulders above the current generation of chips. I've been holding off upgrading for a few months waiting for them to exit. I'm just running an OC'd Q6600, but there just is not anything available now thats faster.
